It is with heartfelt sadness that we share the passing of John E. Chambers of Branford, a man whose presence was matched only by the size of his generous heart. John left us on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at Connecticut Hospice after a long and courageous battle with cancer. His life was a testament to kindness, laughter, and a deep love for the world around him. He was the beloved husband of Yvette Phenix Chambers.
Born in New Haven on March 23, 1957, John was the son of the late Norman R. Chambers, Jr. and Marion Schmidt Chambers. A lifelong resident of Branford, he and his family owned Shelley’s Garden Center on Main Street until its closing in 2023. John’s passion for nature and plants was evident in everything he did, and his gentle spirit was reflected in his care for all of God’s creatures—great and small. He was rarely seen without his loyal German Shepherd, symbolizing his protective nature and deep bond with animals.
John was a devoted family man, survived by his wife Yvette; his children, Christiane (Andy) Fowler of Clinton and Taylor (Benjamin) Chambers-Scussel of Branford; his grandchildren, Henry Fowler, Ava, Aurora, and Autumn Scussel; and his sister, Michele (Alan) Santos of Vermont. He was predeceased by his brother, Norman R. Chambers, III.
Known for his warmth and humor, John had an extraordinary ability to brighten any room. His playful nicknames and welcoming handshake were trademarks of his joyful personality. Beneath that joyful exterior was a steady, peaceful presence—an unwavering source of strength for his family and community.
Private burial services will be held. In honor of John’s lifelong dedication to agriculture and the land he loved, his family hopes his legacy will continue to inspire future leaders. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Lyman Hall FFA and Fox Field Farm 4-H youth programs, helping to ensure his passion endures.
