Ariyonna Orozco, 16, of Sacramento, was among two young lives lost in a devastating single-vehicle crash that also claimed a 14-year-old girl from Wilton and left three other teenagers seriously injured. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 17, 2026, in Sacramento County, leaving families, friends, and the wider community in profound grief.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened at approximately 12:29 a.m. on Scott Road north of Latrobe Road near Sloughhouse. Authorities report that Ariyonna was driving a 2023 BMW X4 when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree at high speed. Witnesses described hearing the sound of tires skidding moments before impact. Following the collision, the vehicle became engulfed in flames.
Emergency response was initiated in part through an iPhone crash detection alert. Before first responders arrived, passing motorists bravely intervened and were able to rescue three rear-seat passengers from the burning vehicle.
Despite these efforts, Ariyonna Orozco and the 14-year-old front-seat passenger were pronounced deceased at the scene. The three surviving passengers, two 16-year-olds and one 15-year-old, were transported to nearby trauma centers, including UC Davis Medical Center, Mercy San Juan Medical Center, and Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center, where they are being treated for moderate to severe injuries.
Elk Grove Unified School District confirmed Ariyonna was a student within the district and noted that two of the injured passengers were also students. Counseling and support services have been made available to assist grieving students, staff, and families during this difficult time.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, with preliminary findings suggesting that speed may have been a contributing factor. At this time, investigators have not determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
As the community mourns this heartbreaking loss, Ariyonna Orozco will be remembered for her youth, her presence, and the lives she touched in her short time. May she rest in peace, and may her loved ones find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
