Ellsworth community is mourning the tragic loss of Grayson Mote, 20, who passed away unexpectedly on May 15, 2026. His death has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him. Though his time here was brief, Grayson’s vibrant spirit, infectious laughter, and warm personality touched everyone he encountered.
Grayson loved spending quality time with those he cared about most. Known for his caring nature, humor, and adventurous spirit, he had a unique ability to make people feel welcome and valued. His bright smile and positive energy left lasting impressions on friends and family alike. Whether climbing at Volta Climbing Gym, hiking the peaks of Acadia National Park, snowboarding at Sugarloaf Mountain, or experimenting in the kitchen, Grayson poured his heart into everything he loved.
This past winter, Grayson worked at The Rack restaurant at Sugarloaf, where he found happiness and a new dream—pursuing a career in cooking. His passion for culinary arts blossomed, and he was excited about the future and the opportunities that lay ahead. His determination to excel in his pursuits reflected his dedication and zest for life.
Grayson was deeply loved by his parents, Kelvin and Tammy Mote; his brothers, Evan Van Dorn, Eric Mote, and Gavin Mote; and his sister, Elizabeth Mote. He was also cherished by extended family and friends who became like family through his loyalty and kindness.
As we mourn his loss, we hold onto his memory—his laughter, stories, mountain hikes, snowfalls, and meals made with love. A memorial service celebrating Grayson’s life will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Ellsworth High School. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grayson Mote Scholarship Fund. Though gone too soon, his light will forever shine in the hearts of all who loved him.
