The Belton community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of 50-year-old Vernon Richard Loechel. He was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon in a severe collision involving a passenger vehicle and a trash truck on FM 439 in Bell County. Vernon’s sudden passing has shocked residents and loved ones, leaving a void in the fabric of the community.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Loechel was driving westbound in an Audi when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle unexpectedly crossed into the oncoming lane. The car collided head-on with a Peterbilt trash truck, triggering a chain reaction that caused the truck to veer off the roadway and crash into Lake Food Mart near Wildwood Drive.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area, assist the injured, and evaluate the damage. Sadly, Loechel was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Duffield. The trash truck driver was transported to Baylor Scott & White Health with non-incapacitating injuries. Additionally, at least two individuals inside the store sustained minor injuries during the impact.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to determine why Loechel’s vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. The incident has left family, friends, and the entire Belton community in shock and grief over losing a man who was taken far too soon.
As the community mourns, residents are coming together to honor Loechel’s life and reflect on the tragedy that has impacted their town. The Texas DPS continues its investigation, and the community offers heartfelt condolences and support to all those affected by this devastating event.
