It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of 82-year-old Richard Culshaw, a well-known and warmly regarded member of the Standish community in Wigan. His death following a traffic collision on Preston Road has left family, friends, and local residents grieving the loss of a man many described as a “lovely gentleman” and a cherished part of village life.
Mr Culshaw was widely recognised for his gentle nature, resilience, and friendliness. Despite living with mobility challenges and using two sticks to walk, he remained active in his daily routine and was often seen enjoying time in his local community. On the day of the incident, he had visited his favourite gathering place, the Secret Garden Coffee Lounge, where he shared conversations and laughter with staff and fellow customers, reflecting the warmth and sociability for which he was so well known.
Shortly afterward, he was involved in a tragic collision with a heavy goods vehicle near the junction of Preston Road and Avondale Road. Emergency services, including the North West Air Ambulance, responded promptly; however, despite their efforts, Mr Culshaw sadly could not be saved.
The Secret Garden Coffee Lounge paid heartfelt tribute, describing him as a valued friend and a beloved part of their extended family. They remembered his curiosity, kindness, and enthusiasm for life, noting that he never allowed his difficulties to diminish his enjoyment of everyday moments or his interest in others.
Community members have also shared their condolences, recalling his friendly conversations, good humour, and presence in village life. Many have spoken of his openness, warmth, and the way he made time for everyone he met.
Police inquiries into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing, and authorities continue to appeal for witnesses and any available CCTV or dashcam footage.
Richard Culshaw will be remembered with great affection as a kind, familiar, and uplifting presence whose loss will be deeply felt throughout the community.
